The draw for the European Zone 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ qualifying play-offs took place at the Home of FIFA in Zurich today. The following pairings have been drawn by FIFA Secretary General Jerome Valcke and South Africa star Steven Pienaar.
Republic of Ireland-France
Portugal-Bosnia-Herzegovina
Greece-Ukraine
Russia-Slovenia
The play-offs will be contested on a two-legged, home-and-away basis on 14 and 18 November.
Numbering among the high-ranking officials from the eight participating nations following the draw with interest were national coaches Carlos Queiroz (Portugal), Matjaz Kek (Slovenia), Miroslav Blazevic (Bosnia Herzegovina) and Alexei Mikhailichenko (Ukraine), plus former France boss and current French FA Technical Director Gerard Houllier.
FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter welcomed the delegates. "It might only be two games, but the stakes are high," he said. "I wish good luck to everyone."
The top four nations in the draw were seeded according to the latest edition of the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking, published on 16 October. France (ranked number 9), Portugal (10), Russia (12) and Greece (16) were placed in Pot 1 and were drawn with the teams in Pot 2, Ukraine (22), Republic of Ireland (34), Bosnia Herzegovina (42) and Slovenia (49).
However, the ranking positions of the unseeded teams does not necessarily reflect their current form, as all four nations have claimed the runners-up spots in their groups with impressive and courageous qualifying campaigns, eliminating big-name former FIFA World Cup contenders such as Croatia, Czech Republic and Sweden along the way.
Pienaar said after helping to make the draw that it was high-scoring Bosnia-Herzegovina's duel with the star-studded Portuguese that excited him most. "I'm looking foward to that one, it will be an exciting pairing," said the Everton midfielder. "I wish all eight teams all the best and look forward to seeing the winners in South Africa."
Play-off format
The team scoring more goals on aggregate wins the play-off. If the scores are level on aggregate, away goals count double. If the teams are level on away goals, or if both matches end goalless, extra-time of two periods of 15 minutes each will be played at the end of the second match. If the score is level after extra time, penalty kicks will be taken to determine the winner.
The winners of the four play-offs qualify for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa.

To Admin,
Several months ago you promised to use better technology to improve video and sound quality as well as to reduce file sizes for downloads. When are you going to implement this technology?
Keep up good work!
THANKS!

Звісно, якщо матч будуть показувати 14 і 18 листопада (а це ще невідомо через небезпечний вірус грипу) 1-й тайм буде доступний для скачування через пів год після закінчення 1-го тайму. І так само другий.

Greece Star Georgios Samaras Eager To Face Ukraine
The attacker has made it clear that he can`t stop thinking about the upcoming World Cup play-off with Ukraine, according to Goal.com.
Greece and Ukraine will battle it out for one spot at the 2010 World Cup when they meet on November 14 and then again four days later. Greek forward Georgios Samaras is eagerly anticipating the two games and has admitted that he can`t stop thinking about the tie.
"The play-off against Ukraine is always in the back of my mind. I know that these games are coming and also how important they are for my country. Being this close to a World Cup is a huge thing, especially for Greece because we have only qualified once before," Samaras said to FIFA.com.
"Sixteen years is a long time and everyone wants to make sure that we are back at this big football party again. It would mean a lot for the country, the people and, of course, for us as players. It would be something that I am sure we would remember for the rest of our lives.
"What we definitely don`t want is to look back after a play-off like this and think, ‘If only I had run more, put in that tackle, won that header or passed that ball better`. It`s important that we don`t come away with any regrets," continued the Celtic striker.
"It was a good thing for us that were seeded and could avoid the likes of France and Portugal but, for me, Ukraine were one of the toughest teams in that second group. Personally, I think it`s 50-50.
"I think it will come down to who plays and handles the occasion better. Whatever happens, I think you will see a good match between two strong, very evenly-matched teams. I know that we are in a good position right now anyway."

To Admin,
Great job on installing the new soft. I can't comment on the quality, because I watched the game live. I may watch game 2 via your web site on Wednesday.
You should set up a free streaming for the next little while, so people can comment on the quality.
