Last year Ukrainian workers transferred more than 27 billion dollars back home to their families in Ukraine, which is almost eight percent of the National domestic product. These numbers were presented by the head of International organizations for migration. According to the data released, currently there are more than seven million Ukrainians working in European countries and in Russia, and only about 500 thousands from all of the workers have legal status and work permit. The rest are working illegally and every time can be sent back to the motherland. Because of their legal status Ukrainian workers get paid less for the jobs in construction, hotel, farming and services industries.
In Portugal Ukrainians are now the third largest minority and they get a "special treatment" when it comes to getting a work permit because Ukraine and Portugal have an agreement between the two countries. But most of the European Union countries do not have such agreements on a government level and people are forced to work illegally, get paid "under the table" without any medical insurance, company benefits or access to social services.
