Press Release
Ukrainian Hockey Hero Subject for New Book of Poetry
LONDON, Ontario - Terry Sawchuk is still considered by many to be the greatest goaltender to ever play hockey - he was voted top goalie of
all time by The Hockey News. He was born and raised in Winnipeg of Ukrainian heritage. Sawchuk's greatest achievement was his career
record of 103 shutouts during his twenty year hockey career - a record that remains
unsurpassed among NHL goaltenders. In 1967 Sawchuk's play helped the Maple Leafs defeat the Chicago Black Hawks in the Stanley Cup semi-final and the Montreal Canadiens in the finals - the Maple Leafs have not won the
Stanley Cup since. He suffered from untreated depression and died at 40 years old after a scuffle with a teammate.
This month Brick Books has published Night Work: The Sawchuk Poems by Randall Maggs, a collection of poems that draws the reader inside the
complex personality of Sawchuk, and follows him through the triumphs and failures of his twenty-year NHL career and tells, in a highly distinctive way, the story of the game itself and much of the culture that produced it.
Night Work: The Sawchuk Poems recounts the life, in and out of hockey, of Terry Sawchuk, premier goalie in the era of the original-six NHL. Like
many other goalies, Sawchuk was "a guy from a different planet," but he was more different than other goalies. Maggs probes his upbringing
in a household of Ukrainian immigrant parents, a "faraway father" and a mother who was the "only one in the world who scared him," forming a dark
and unpredictable character that would be perpetually at odds with his highly public
athletic life. No wonder he lost his way. The book draws a reader inside the complex
personality of Sawchuk, and follows him through the triumphs and failures of his twenty-year NHL career. Night Work: The Sawchuk Poems is illustrated with photographs mirroring the text, depicting key moments in the career of Terry Sawchuk, his exploits and his agony.
Night Work: The Sawchuk Poems has been exhaustively researched but then thoroughly
imagined. Maggs has taken liberties with the apparent facts and has imagined Terry's thoughts and, in some cases, shuffled dates and taken poetic license with some people's words and actions. The book is based in the real but has been internalized and re-envisioned. The result is a gripping hockey saga that wraps the game's
story in the intense, moody and contradictory character of Terry Sawchuk, one of the greatest goalies of all time.
"Through his marvelous, moving poetry, Randall Maggs gets closer than any biographer to the heart of the darkest, most troubled figure in the history of the national game. This may be the truest hockey book ever written. It reachesa level untouched by conventional sports literature... His Sawchuk is real." -- Stephen
Brunt, Globe and Mail sports columnist
".Night Work: The Sawchuk Poems, by Randall Maggs, [has] bettered a slew of old boys' tomes and put dynamic hockey writing back in the hands of the people - Dave Bidini, singer, songwriter, guitarist, a founding member of the Rheostatics and hockey player, fan and writer, in the Globe and Mail Best Reads for 2007
Randall Maggs teaches English Literature at Corner Brook's Sir Wilfred Grenfell College of Memorial University of Newfoundland. He is a co-anthologist of Canadian, Newfoundland and Irish poetry, and is widely anthologized himself, most recently in The Way It Looks From Here: Contemporary Canadian Writing on Sports
(ed. Stephen Brunt). He is the author of a previous book of poems Timely Departures (1994).
"Ukrainian Bones", a poem from Night Work: The Sawchuk Poems is attached for reproduction in print or broadcast.
